Everything you need to know for a successful and respectful trip
Traveling in Guinea is an extraordinary adventure that requires some preparation. Our practical advice, based on the experience of local guides and experienced travelers, will help you make the most of your stay while respecting local culture.
Dry season (November-April): This is the ideal time! Pleasant temperatures (25-30°C), little rain, passable roads. The harmattan (dry Sahara wind) sometimes brings dust but cools the atmosphere.
Rainy season (May-October): Beautiful green landscapes, spectacular waterfalls, but difficult roads in some regions. Ideal for nature lovers who don't mind humidity.
Our advice: December-February for perfect weather, March-April for fewer crowds, June-August for the greenest landscapes.
Essential clothing: Light and breathable fabrics (cotton, linen), long sleeves for evenings and mosquito protection, swimsuit, comfortable walking shoes, sandals, hat or cap.
Health and hygiene: SPF 50+ sunscreen, mosquito repellent, personal medications, first aid kit, hand sanitizer, wet wipes.
Electronics: Universal adapter, power bank, waterproof camera, flashlight, unlocked phone for local SIM card.
Greetings: Guineans place great importance on greetings. Take time to say hello, ask about family. A simple "How are you?" with a smile opens all doors.
Dress code: Dress modestly, especially in rural and religious areas. Avoid very short shorts and low necklines. Cover your shoulders in mosques.
Photos: Always ask permission before photographing people. Many accept happily, but respecting their choice is essential.
Must-try dishes: Riz gras (rice with beef fat), grilled fish, peanut sauce, fonio (local cereal), grilled plantain bananas. Tropical fruits are delicious: mangoes, papayas, pineapples.
Where to eat: Local restaurants for authenticity, hotels for food safety, markets for fresh fruits. Avoid tap water, prefer bottled water.
Etiquette: Often eaten with hands (right hand). Wash hands before and after. Sharing a meal is an honor, accept with gratitude.
